We’re having a girl! How to start her musical journey?

April 30th, 2009

This past Monday we went to one of the most important ultrasounds of the pregnancy – the “boy or girl” event!  I was prepared for it to be amazing, but I have to say that it turned out to be an experience I will never forget.  Our previous two ultrasounds were great, and there were fantastic moments (like hearing the baby’s heartbeat for the first time).  But this one was on a completely different scale for me.  First, they roll in the big daddy of ultrasound machines, which should have given me a clue about what’s about to happen.  Then, once the lights go dim in the examination room, and they get the TV all set up, you start to feel like you’re in a movie theater watching your legacy unfold right in front of you.  The ultrasound lasted 20 minutes, but we just wanted it to go on forever.  The first thing we saw as the image came up, was this wave:

We had a great technician who clearly loves her job – and this makes the experience even better.  She was able to catch all the right moments – here’s a picture where you can see the baby’s spine perfectly:

And then finally, when the technician was done doing all her measurements, it was time to go looking for the “boy or girl” information.  The umbilical chord didn’t play along right away, but finally the technician calmly said “yep, that’s a girl.”  I couldn’t believe that it was that simple, so she had to check 3 times before I believed her.

It is so great to know we’re having a girl – I feel like I can really start bonding with her now.  Pretty soon the time will come for me to introduce her to music.  I think that the first piece of music she should hear in the womb is John Mayer’s Daughters.  It just makes sense, doesn’t it?  After that, we’ll move on to Coldplay’s We Never Change, followed by the whole Rush Of Blood To The Head album.  I think we’ll keep it mellow for a while – no U2 just yet.  So much to teach her, so little time!

Thanks for everyone’s support so far, it’s been so great to share this wonderful journey with you.  Next step: preparing the nursery.  I have no idea what I’m doing so this should be fun.
